Wanted to do a little article on SEO that is Search Engine Optimisation, making your website get higher ranks in the major search engines, our primary goal is google! Hope you enjoy.

SEO Quick Explanation

In order to get the best possible search results in google, we use key phrases such as “Surrey Web site designer”, we dont use “Web designer” as its too general!, If we are targetting that key phrase we want to make sure it is repeated in some combination through that page, watch that you dont overuse it though as it can be detrimental to the results between 5 to 10 should be sufficient.

Search engines take priority to certain website tags (in the html code) and also take note of the browser title, page title and short description these tags are not seen on the site but are normally displayed in search results. HTML Code tag order is normally – H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, and P, we do not have to use all the tags but need at least H1 tag, H2 tag and P should where possible always be included!.

SEO Layout to supply to the website designer

Try to figure out the keyphrase you want the search engines to pick up on for this example we will use “Surrey based website designer” (highlighted in red are where I have tried to use these keyword/phrases, by doing this the search engines will pick up these words and will think this is very relevent to the page).

Example with keyphrase

Surrey based website designer

Browser page title:

Subtitle H2 Tag, this tag is normally the strap or subtitle:

Website designers make your vision a reality

Subtitle H2 Tag, this tag is normally the strap or subtitle:

Website designers make your vision a reality

Subtitle H3, H4, H5, H6 Tags, the size of these will get smaller as
we drill down to H6, they are good to include but not essential,
could be good as bold text to highlight a section

Outline and discussion points

Hopefully this has given you a bit more of an insight into how search engines work?
But remember its a balance we dont want the site to look to spammy if there is too much use of keywords the search engine will not list it!!! so just add it where you can we can always analyse the pages and see whats working later 🙂

These are just some things we have to bear in mind as website designers, but we also know the need to get your message across clearly and without repetition, these papers are purely for you to understand and try to adhere to as long as it does not make your site a rambling jumble of phrases, this would be counter productive as viewers might not stay long!! so you might have fewer customer but they might be of a better quality!

Other things to take into account

Search engines also look at the ratio of images to text! its crazy but they do, so try to add as much text down as possible, with the way the world is “very visual” its really hard to keep a good ratio specially with video and galleries, so dont worry too much but do bear it in mind!

OK so thats the main points, hopefully you have more of an understanding without getting too deep!!!
